Trump et DeSantis, deux figures politiques importantes des États-Unis, tous deux républicains et les yeux rivés sur les primaires, sont prêts pour la campagne. Hier alliés du même parti, mais demain deux futurs rivaux pour le siège du bureau ovale tant convoité, l’ancien Président des États-Unis et le gouverneur de Floride sont aujourd’hui dans l’arène pour gagner.
Rappel sur le fonctionnement politique des États-Unis
Les institutions parlementaires
Les États-Unis, pays historiquement attaché à la démocratie, séparent le pouvoir en trois pôles : le Président, le Congrès et le Sénat. Les membres du Congrès sont élus par le peuple dans leur État respectif. Chaque État possède un nombre de représentants proportionnel à sa population.
Ensuite, les sénateurs sont aussi élus dans chaque État, mais le nombre dans chaque État est identique (deux par État).
Enfin, l’élection du Président s’effectue différemment. Chaque État possède plus ou moins de voix en fonction du nombre de représentants dans les chambres. Ainsi, chaque État a plus ou moins de poids dans les élections.
Ce modèle d’élection a suscité plusieurs scandales, dont celui de Trump lors des élections de 2016. Les États appelés « swing states », c’est-à-dire des États qui n’ont pas un parti de prédilection et peuvent donner la victoire, ont été soumis à l’influence de l’entreprise Cambridge Analytica mandatée par l’équipe trumpienne. Bannon et son équipe de trolls parviennent à influencer les votants hésitants par l’intermédiaire des réseaux, ce qui s’avère être un réel « game changer » lors des résultats.
Que retenir des deux mandats
Premièrement, le mandat Trump marque un réel basculement dans la vie politique américaine. Son influence est réellement clivante dans une société toujours plus communautaire (ethnies, genre, sujets de société). Il est là pour choquer, mais surtout, il n’hésite pas à changer son discours, voire nier certains propos.
Les séquelles sont encore visibles aujourd’hui, alors même que Biden prend position dans le bureau ovale, les militants trumpistes prennent d’assaut le Capitole, symbole d’une puissance irrémédiable pour la démocratie américaine, symptôme du trumpisme. Autres conséquences durant le mandat Biden : l’abandon de Roe v. Wade, cas de la Cour suprême garantissant le droit à l’avortement. Ce qui a remis en cause les droits des femmes, puisque la majorité des États républicains l’interdisent.
Biden, aussi connu sous le nom de sleepy Joe, récupère une Amérique fracturée qui a besoin de résultats tant économiques que géopolitiques et sociaux. Toutefois, le manque de carrure et les querelles politiques font perdre du terrain aux États-Unis au profit de la Chine (comme en Arabie saoudite). Biden, attendu comme le grand sage au vu de son âge, ne parvient pas à réunir les morceaux d’Amérique et dégrade son image avec ses culbutes à répétition.
Dans ce paysage politique quelque peu chaotique, le retour de Trump ou l’avènement de DeSantis paraît irrémédiable. Toutefois, lequel des deux parviendra à asseoir sa gouvernance, un futur combat de coqs dans l’arène des débats des primaires est-il à prévoir ?

Who is who
A brief introduction to the two main characters of today’s article: First, there’s Trump, the former president of the United States, well-known as a businessman and reality TV show producer. He lost the 2020 presidential elections and claimed that Biden cheated. After extensive investigations, it became evident that Trump simply does not like to lose. However, he gained something even more significant: the support of millions of Americans. The Capitol riot in January 2021 revealed that beyond a conservative label, Trump initiated an entire movement called Trumpism, a new ideology that is reshaping the political landscape.
The second figure is R. DeSantis, the current governor of Florida. He hails from the South and attended Yale and Harvard Law School. He served in the military and is an intellectual dedicated to his country. It is evident that he has ambitions to run for president someday. DeSantis has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2012 and became the governor of Florida in 2018. He has a clear vision for Florida’s future and, in my opinion, for the entire country. To understand DeSantis’ political stance, he is against gun control, any taxation for combating global warming, immigration, and LGBTQ+ rights.
What to expect from the rookie
Political action
Ron became the governor of the Sunshine State in 2018. Since then, he has enforced and passed bills to restrain woke culture and promote guns and conservative measures. During the campaign, he received support from Trump and asserted that he could not disagree with him. To boost the economy in his state, he reduced taxation and increased the budget; he also managed to significantly decrease the unemployment rate. He found the right equation to please his constituents.
DeSantis has a longstanding conservative policy tradition to maintain. Therefore, he started with schools, implementing a wide range of measures, beginning with banning critical race theory, followed by the Stop WOKE Act, which is an extension. As soon as Roe v. Wade was overturned, he swiftly banned abortion. As a staunch pro-life advocate, rape or human trafficking is no exception. He also prohibited discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools, leading to a dispute with Disney, which he judged to be too woke for Florida.
Against all odds, he is committed to helping Spanish speakers vote. Yet, his commitment to minorities stops right here, as he boosted immigration control with E-Verify (forcing employers to check work permits). He also has a little humor by sending migrants directly near Biden’s property in Massachusetts, and he sent a workforce in order to help his Texan friend with the order.
Unveiling the campaign
After months of speculation, DeSantis confirmed his bid for president last May. He is one of the younger candidates, but according to the polls, he is in a close race with Trump for the magic seat. The release of his memoir, ‘The Courage to Be Free’, set the framework for his campaign. He also demonstrated his interest in representing his country abroad. The key thing to remember is how DeSantis announced his participation. He used Twitter (now X) with the help of Elon Musk. Yet, it is to be remembered that Trump has a long history with this social media platform, highlighting the distance and clear position of DeSantis toward his opponent.
Trump’s magic bag
Recently arrested for electoral pressures, he used his prison photo as a marketing tool (on mugs, t-shirts, etc.). He never stops being a businessman and is determined to win his seat for the final battle in November 2024. In every scandal, he sees an opportunity to turn it into an advertisement for his campaign and his ideas. By rallying his fellow supporters, he has the deep America behind him.
Trump already envisions himself as the winner of the primaries, and he created a new think-tank called AFPI. It aspires to become the next administration in the White House, as the organization’s leader is compiling a list of potential recruits to serve the Republicans. This scheme has been designed to remove any obstructionists and is likely to result in an illiberal democracy. After his first term in office, Trump learnt a few tricks that would make his hypothetical second term easier and more effective. First, he plans to carefully choose his attorneys general to quash any investigations against him while initiating many against his opponents. He will also continue to implement his regular policies, such as environmental disregard, tax cuts, and industrial development.
Voter analysis
There is one thing to keep in mind, he represents what I call “deep America”, which is not the America the world knows but the countryside. He knows that most people living on the coast are not going to vote for him, however they do not represent the majority of the Americans and yet they own most of the wealth. The point is, because of those inequalities Trump can win a second time. He points out what prevents the heart of America from earning more money, whether it is the Chinese or climate protectors. All in all, his team and he knows how to seduce voters who are either fervent Trumpists or swing voters.
Conclusion
Après une longue coopération, Trump et DeSantis sont bien décidés à remporter leur place pour les élections de 2024. Aujourd’hui, tous les coups sont permis et DeSantis ne se gêne pas pour dégrader l’image de son concurrent, notamment en critiquant l’attaque du Capitole. Malgré les charges maintenues contre lui, Trump ne désespère pas et continue sa bataille judiciaire et politique « at all cost ».
